White's Tree Frog
Litoria caerulea
White's Tree Frogs are also known as the Dumpy Tree Frog, WTF, Green Tree Frog (in Australia), and Indonesian White's (when shipped from Indonesia). These frogs are large, rotund, and arboreal. Males reach 3 to 5½ inches, while females may get as large as 6 inches SVL. These frogs vary in color, with many generally appearing mint or teal. These frogs can change their color, however, based on environments, lighting, and stress. As one of the most common pet tree frogs, White's are often bred in captivity, and many color morphs and phases are available.
-In Nature-
Range
The natural habitats of Litoria caerulea are forests in Australia and New Guinea.
Life Span
These frogs live about 10 years in the wild on average.
Diet
In their natural habitat, these frogs eat moths, beetles, roaches, smaller frogs, and even very small mammals.
-In Captivity-
Life Span
In captivity, these frogs are known to live up to 16 years, but a few have been recorded as old as 20.
Diet
White's may be fed crickets, mealworms, moths, and roaches. A Hornworm (Hawk Moth larvae) may occasionally be fed as a treat.
Housing
An 18x18x24 terrarium may house two adults comfortably. The enclosure should have plants, logs, and vines for climbing. The water dish should be shallow to avoid drowning, and large enough that all frogs may soak at once.
Feeding
Each Adult should be fed 2 to 3 crickets, or substitute prey, every other day. Prey items should be calcium dusted every 2 to 3 feedings.
Temperature
70 to 85°F
Humidity
30 to 50%
Heating & Lighting
A 25 or 50 Watt halogen will accommodate heating and lighting needs. UVB not required.
Handling
Although these frogs typically handle quite well, this should be avoided unless necessary to avoid absorption of oils and other toxic matter.
Compatibility
White's are social, and can be kept in groups when provided with enough space, as long as all tank mates are the same or very similar in size.
