Mantellas

Mantella

There are 16 known species of Mantella. These small, dazzling frogs grow to about 2 inches SVL, and come in a flashy array of colors. Usually, these colors include bright patterns of blacks, blues, oranges, yellows, and greens. Mantellas are diurnal, and only one of the 16 known species isn't considered threatened by the IUCN. Most of these bright little frogs are poisonous, due to their diet.

-In Nature-

Range

Madagascar's forest floors are home to all 16 Mantella species.

Life Span

Mantellas live 5 to 10 years in nature.

Diet

In their natural habitat, these frogs eat small invertebrates such as ants and termites.

-In Captivity-

Life Span

In captivity, these frogs are known to live 5 to 10 years.

Diet

Captive Mantellas should be fed pinhead crickets and, mainly, fruit flies.

Housing

A 10 gallon terrarium may house as many as 5 individuals, while a 29 gallon may house as many a 10. 3 of the enclosure's 4 sides should be covered with a natural background, to help these small frogs feel secure. Coconut fiber with sphagnum moss creates a great substrate for these frogs. Live plants pair well with Mantellas, as they are small and do not dig.The water dish should be very shallow, but large enough to hold all the frogs at once.

Feeding

Prey such as fruit flies may roam the enclosure for eating at the frogs' leisure. All crickets should be calcium dusted, and may be offered daily. Any crickets that grow too large for the frogs should be removed immediately.

Temperature

65 to 75°F, depending on species

Humidity

60 to 80%

Heating & Lighting

A heat mat is preffered for these species, but a 15W or 20W infrared bulb may be used for heating and viewing.

Handling

Mantellas should not be handled, as they are small, delicate, and most species are poisonous.

Compatibility

All Mantella thrive well in groups, but should have adequate space as males tend to be aggressively territorial.
